Rooibos is Afrikaans and means Redbush because the most striking thing about this leguminous shrub is the burning red colour of its needles. The natives of its homeland, South Africa, have been preparing a fine tasting and health inducing tea from this plant for many a long time. It was introduced to the European taste buds around one hundred years ago after being discovered by a Russian merchant. As an offspring of an old tea merchants family, he was at first curious and then filled with enthusiasm after his first sip. He was the first to put Rooibos on the market.
Rooibos is a peoples drink in the true sense of the word. It doesnt have the somewhat bitter taste of black or green tea but is instead, fruity and naturally sweet even without sugar! The fine aroma and intensive red colour are also loved by children. This tea is caffeine free so you can drink as much as you want when you want without any negative side effects.
However, this new star amongst the wellness teas does have many positive effects to offer. Scientists have so far discovered over 200 agents which are contained in the plant and its infusions. In the meantime, the positive effect on the human body has been proved in a variety of treatments: it works against depression, relieves cramps and is anti-allergic. It contains substances which destroy the free radicals helping to avoid the onset of cancer and provides high portions of iron, fluoride and calcium to help even out your daily mineral intake. It has also been used successfully in the production of natural cosmetics for quite a while now.
Rooibush is delicious whether served hot or cold and can also be served with sugar and milk or can be used as a basis for exotic summer drinks.
